That’s either where we picked up or dropped off good ol’ Leroy Pumpkinseed, a hitchhiker I met on that same childhood vacation. Quite possibly the only hitchhiker we g ave a ride to between about 6 of those month-long trips. No idea why he met my parents criteria.

On the way back to Stlouis from vacation 4-wheeling in Moab my buddies transmission blew up. We stayed the night here and I flat towed his Jeep from here to Oklahoma where I turned over duties to another buddy that meet us from Stlouis with a truck to go through the Ozarks.

W atch out for the meth and the hugely corrupt county jail and sheriff’s department . There’s still some Route 66 relics to see in town, but Tucumcari is one of those perpetually struggling places that never recovered from the decline of passenger train travel across the US and I-40 replacing Route 66. Outside of servicing the limited farming and ranching in the area, it struggles to have a purpose in the modern world.
